The agricultural sector and food security in Yemen encounters serious challenges. The most important challenge is the destruction of environmental and agricultural resources such as water, and the natural vegetative, as well as the deterioration of the traditional agricultural systems that the Yemeni people have practiced since thousands of years.
The destruction of water resources threatens the agricultural sector and human life in general. The most important region that are currently facing huge destruction of water resources is Tihama Plain. Whereas, due to the war and its socio-economic impacts such as increasing fuel prices and unemployment which contributed to the pressure on environmental and agricultural resources to meet the urgent needs of the population. As example, the spread of solar-powered pumps, and The significant increase in the number of artesian wells lead to a huge increase in consumption and destroying water resources during the last seven years. In addition, the farmers do not know the proper agricultural practices that are compatible with climatic changes and the problem of scarcity of water resources.
